Dear Readers: Dr. Joffe was honored to have chaired a presentation during the last CHADD National Meeting in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Peter Jensen (from the Reach Institute) and Dr. Lillian Fujimoto (Pediatrician from Hawaii) and Dr. Joffe talked about the importance for therapists, physicians, and other mental health and health professionals to be aware of cultural differences in treating children and their families. It is really important that clinicians as well as patients feel comfortable with exchanging information and to sharing their concerns, knowledge, as well as feelings. Cultural factors play an important role in the development of rapport between doctors and patients, between families and treating therapists, as well as between teachers and children and their families. Sometimes it is important for patients to inform their treating physicians and therapists about their culture, and about their fears and concerns due to their family, as well as cultural history. Having open communication about cultural factors that may play a role in treatment has a very powerful effect on the success of any treatment in mental health as well as in general health.
